Fall 2019 Tutoring Positions Available in the English Language Support Office

Duration: Fall semester 2019 and possible beyond
Time Commitment: average 4-6 hours a week
Compensation: $16 an hour

Tutoring international graduate students and postdocs is challenging but rewarding work that can have a real impact on their success. Cornell’s English Language Support Office (ELSO) offers one-on-one tutoring for international graduate students and postdocs. Tutors work on any writing project, from class assignments to dissertations, on all levels, from grammar to overall structure. To a lesser extent, tutors also work with clients on any prepared speech, such as presentations or job talks. For this position, experience tutoring is not necessary. Pre-program and ongoing training is provided. However all applicants should have strong writing skills and a knowledge of the writing process. In addition, experience developing and giving presentations is a plus. Essential to the job is an open mind toward working with diverse populations, a keen interested in language, and patience.

Graduate students from across the fields are encouraged to apply. We appreciate students with a strong English language background. We always need students from STEM and professional fields.

Required for the Position
 Current Cornell graduate or professional student
 Strong interpersonal communication skills
 Experience and an interest in academic writing and presenting
 A willingness to learn more about writing and language
 An interest in engaging with people from diverse backgrounds and disciplines

Preferred for the Position
 Experience with Cornell’s writing program (the Knight Institute) or with a writing center
 Teaching experience
 Editing texts for structure
 Background in grammar
 Experience writing and presenting in different fields
 Experience using an additional language or additional languages
 Traveling or living abroad

ELSO tutors will be responsible for:
• Participating in ongoing (paid) training on responding to and supporting writers and presenters working on diverse projects, in diverse disciplines, and from diverse language backgrounds.
• Meeting with scheduled post-docs and multilingual graduate and professional students to provide feedback on writing projects and presentations.
• Keeping tutoring records of appointments.
